Focus on active safety for lorry manufacturers
Lorry manufacturer Volvo has announced plans to boost the safety of its haulage vehicles by taking an active approach to safety.

In a shift from the passive action to safety which focuses on limiting the damage caused to vehicles and the chance of injury for drivers, the active approach aims to cut out the possibility of accidents happening in the first place.

"The injury-reducing effect of the seatbelt is hard to beat when compared to other safety devices, but work still remains to be done," commented Lennart Svenson, former head of the Volvo truck accident research team at Volvo Truck Corporation.

As a result, a research team has been set up by the manufacturer to examine new methods for detecting and reacting to hazards that the driver might miss.

It will look at ways to improve the interaction with man and machine to boost safety for the company's newest models.

Last month, UK business L&B Haulage announced it has been dedicated to the Volvo brand for more than the last 25 years, having used the company's vehicles exclusively since 1983.
