Carroll requests fuel duty Early Day Motion - http://www.roadtransport.com - January,10
Industry campaigner Peter Carroll has requested that an Early Day Motion (EDM) be put down in Parliament calling for action to get a level playing field on fuel duty for UK hauliers.
Carroll has written to Liberal Democrat shadow transport secretary Norman Baker asking him to table the motion as soon as possible.
"As an industry, we need to know which MPs are sympathetic to our plight. Norman Baker is proving to be very supportive in our fight against the unfairness of the current situation where foreign vehicles flood into the UK full of cheap fuel," says Carroll.
The wording of the EDM is not yet drafted, but it is likely to ask MPs to support measures to limit the amount of fuel that lorries can bring into the country.
"This would be a major step in levelling up what is currently a very unlevel playing field. Just as importantly, we will be able to monitor who signs up to the motion and then hopefully make contact with them to see if they will help further in our battle," adds Carroll.
Meanwhile, Carroll's bid to become a political champion for the road transport industry is picking up pace. His election campaign for a seat in Maidstone and the Weald is gaining industry support, with TransAction founder Mike Presneill and Dodd's Transport chairman Jim Dodd both donating funds to the appeal.
